Nokia starts global positioning service

Nokia started a new service in which, it said, dramatically cuts the time a GPS-enabled cellphone takes to pinpoint its whereabouts, opening new business opportunities for location-based services.
So far, the long startup which takes up to three minutes in good conditions, has hampered takeup of cellphone navigation. But Nokia hopes the service, available for users of its flagship N95 phones, will cut that time to one minute.
Nokia, the world's largest cellphone maker, bought into the navigation industry last year through its acquisition of German firm Gate5 and started to offer free maps and routing data in February 2007, while charging extra fees for turn-by-turn navigation.

Glass based hard disks

The main difference between a hard disk and a floppy disk is the substrate that serves as the support for the magnetic recording material. Hard disks are typically made using a solid plate of aluminum. Hitachi has developed a glass plate that serves the same purpose with better results. Since the glass plate can be made more flat and smooth than an aluminum plate, the magnetic recording material takes on a smoother finish when deposited on top of the plate. It allows reducing the distance between the data read/write beads and the surface of the hard disc. This in turn means that the individual bits of data can be positioned closer together.

To overcome the disadvantage of the fragility of glass, Hitachi finely controlled the crystal structure of the glass, doubling its bending strength and also increasing its resistance to scratching. A prototype glass plate of diameter 9 cm made from this glass material is smooth enough to allow the read/write heads to come to within les than 10 nm of the plate surface. In practical terms, this means that the data can be recorded at a density of around 50 gigabits/in2, which is 60% more than on a typical aluminum based magnetic disk. Another advantage of glass is that the spinning disk makes less noise, so hard drives will operate more quietly.

Now Play Sounds with Digital Paper

Now it's the turn of e-paper to make sounds, and advertising guys would love
that. The e-paper uses a mix of technologies (including e-link) to embed
information in each sheet,so that when you touch a specific portion of the
paper where the news is,you get to hear a sound- be it a voice, musictrack
or the text that's on the paper.
A result of Swedish research,a few prototypes have been released that
shows how the e-paper can be used in advertising or how posters in
music stores could one day play tracks simply by having someone
touch them.Should we say, that now we will soon have speaking
advertisements
The price of the product is still not announced. This will bring a great
revolution in the technology world.

Glossary of Most Common Graphics Terminology

AGP -
Dedicated point to point interface that connects a graphics Card/Video
Card directly to system's memory and processor. Its now been faced
out and taken over by PCI express.
Anisotropic Filtering (AF) -
A method to improve the image quality of texture on the surface, which
are far off and on high angle with respect to the camera. It makes the
texture to look like a trapezoid instead of square, reduces the blur and
in process enhances the details on screen.
Anti Aliasing (AA) - Anti aliasing improves the overall image quality by reducing the
distortion, using softwares to provide smooth and natural image.
in most of todays's graphics card there are several levels of anti
aliasing. The higher the level chosen the more processing power
it requires but the overall image quality will improve.
Application Programming Interface (API) - Technically API is a source code interface that a program library
provide in accordance to the request made by computer program.
But in layman terms it is the set of instructions that allows a game
programmer the freedom to work more creatively, without having
to stick to the routine operation across all game.It enables them
to add their own flavor to the game.Examples of API's are open
GL,Direct 3D etc.
